NEW ULM, MINN. – The Bethany women’s basketball team used double-double efforts from both Dakota Ellinghuysen  and Briana Brandts to propel them to a 56-53 UMAC road win Tuesday night at Martin Luther.

The Vikings had to fight their way back from an early deficit as the Knights scored 11 of the game’s first 13 points. Brandts started a 9-1 run to get Bethany back in the contest. She hit a lay-up then connected on a 3 to start the spurt. Later, a pair of Brandts free throws knotted the game at 20 with 4:51 left in the half. Martin Luther countered with seven straight points before Bethany closed out the half on a 7-1 run to trail by only one at the break at 28-27.

While Brandts led Bethany back in the first half, Ellinghuysen captured and then extended a lead for the Vikings. She scored six of Bethany’s first eight second half points as BLC built a 35-30 lead 3:45 into the half. An Ellinghuysen jumper gave the Vikings their biggest lead at 41-34 and that was later matched with 7:32 left after an Angela DeBruzzi lay-in to make the score 47-40.

It was the Knights’ turn to fight their way back as they would tie the score at 50 with 2:30 remaining. Bethany went back to Brandts as her lay-in regained the lead at 52-50 with 2:01 left. Brandts and Lacey Ellinghuysen connected on their free throws to extend the lead to 56-50. Grace Schultz hit a 3 with nine second left for MLC to make it 56-53. Following a Bethany turnover, the Knights had chances to tie the game, but couldn’t get the shot to go down and Bethany held on for the victory.

Dakota Ellinghuysen scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while Brandts totaled 14 and also pulled down 11 boards.

Bethany (5-14, 4-4 in UMAC) returns home to face Northwestern Friday at 5:30 p.m.
