MADISON LAKE, MINN. — Fishing opener kicks off Saturday, May 9th (12:01 am) and for the first time in many years, the weather looks to be perfect here in South Central Minnesota.

“Weather should be in the mid 40’s overnight on Friday with a light wind from the north at about 5 to 10 miles per hour,” said KEYC News 12 Chief Meteorologist Mark Tarello “Saturday will be around 68 degrees and the winds may pick up a little to 10 to 15 miles per hour from the north or north east.”

Ryan White, owner of White’s Corner Bait Shop in Madison Lake, Minnesota has been checking the weather and stocking up his bait for the opener.

“This is one of the best opener forecasts in the past seven years for a Friday and Saturday,” said White “The water temperature is right where it needs to be to get good bites.”

Ryan took the time to hand separate the leeches for the opener.

Fishing opener in Minnesota is a tradition that spans many generations.  People can catch the treasured Walleye, Sauger and Northern Pike for the first time in the 2015 season.

“The area lakes will be busy, especially Washington and Madison,” said White “Hopefully people take their time getting in and out of the water and enjoy the great sport of fishing.”

White’s have adjusted their usual hours to help people get out on the lake just about any time they want.

“We will be open on Friday from  7:00 am to 12 Midnight, Saturday from 4:30 am to 8:00 pm and Sunday from  4:30 am to 6:00 pm,” said White

Bait is an integral part of fishing and White said he is very prepared this year.

“We are fully stocked with huge fat heads, Golden shiners, suckers, very large fat heads, crawlers and sorted jumbo and large leeches,” White said “I went threw three different vendors and we hand sorted the leeches.”

Besides live bait, White’s Corner Bait Shop has other fishing accessories including hooks, line, lures, rods and reels and much more including snacks.

Doc E will be selling BBQ on Saturday outside of the bait shop.

“Doc E’s trailer will be here serving up some smoked meat to go on Saturday,” said White “I don’t have the exact times yet but will be updating them on my facebook page when I do.”

This year, the Minnesota DNR has opened up Bass fishing for the opener.

“People are able to intentionally fish for Bass this year,” said White “It is a catch and release program but does get the bass fishers out early.  Small and Large Mouth Bass season starts May 23rd where people can keep their fish.”

The most popular lakes where people will be fishing this opener are Lake Washington and Madison Lake.  Some of the more quiet “Sleeper” lakes will be Lake Frances and Ballantyne Lake.

“The sleeper lakes will be good fishing, just less people fishing on them. People will also be fishing the river,” said White “Since this is the opener, we are just going off of history and what happened this winter as to where people should fish.  After this weekend, the reports will come in and I will be able to let people know the hot lakes.”

Opener is also Take-a-Mom fishing weekend. What mother wouldn’t want to spend time on a local lake, taking in the warm sun and catching some walleye?

Take a Mom Fishing Weekend allows any mother who is a resident of Minnesota to fish without a license on Saturday, May 9 and Sunday, May 10, a weekend that coincides with both the 2014 walleye and northern pike fishing opener and also Mother’s Day on Sunday.

If you do not have a boat, there are a number of fishing piers on the local lakes including the recently improved fishing pier at Jefferson Lake in Le Sueur County.

“This should be a great opener. We want to remind people to be safe and use good commonsense while out on the lakes.” Said White
