MANKATO, MINN. — The Mankato West High School Alpine Ski Team won the 2016 Wuk Fut trophy Tuesday night at Mount Kato beating Mankato East/Loyola 432-353. The fun and friendly competition has been bringing the ski racing community together for 26 years to celebrate the great outdoor sport of skiing.
Skiers from Mankato West, Mankato East/Loyola and Crystal Valley as well as alumni took two runs a piece down the course on Wolf Ridge, each vying for the top spot with the fastest combined times.
Mankato Ski Coach and Flying Penguin owner Jon Andersen shed a little light on the race.
“Wut Fut, loosely translated from Swedish stands for “ski fast” and was a phrase used by Swedish brother and sister skiers Carolina and Henrick Isaksson before they embarked on a race,” said Coach Andersen “The trophy was crafted by Rich O’Brien from a log from my grandpa who started this ski area back in the 1920’s,” he said “It is symbolic, it is unique, and not necessarily up to date but definitely something the skiers want to get their hands on.”
Some of the skiers were dressed in not so usual attire for the race; something that the Coach said is by design.
“This is a different kind of race. We train and travel together and sometimes even live together,” Coach Andersen said “While other cross town rivalries may be adversarial and divide the community, we wanted this race to build and unite the entire skiing community.”
After the race skiers and families gathered on the second floor of the Chalet for a buffet provided by the families and for the award presentation.
A combined 71 High School skiers entered the competition, the largest number since the ski program started.
