MANKATO, MINN. — The Mankato Loyola/LCWM/St. Clair senior Jenna Helget had three goal to lead the Crusaders girls’ soccer team past section rival Fairmont 4-2 Tuesday night in Mankato. With the win the Crusaders improve to 5-1-1.
The Crusaders started out slow but picked it up towards the end of the first half when Emily Schumacher placed a perfect pass to Jenna Helget who then drove the ball past Fairmont keeper Haley Burmeister for the score at 37:49 to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead.
Helget scored again off an assist from Schumacher at 38:15 to quickly bring the Crusader lead to 2-0.
Loyola started out quickly in the second half with Sidney Botker driving the ball into an empty net off an assist by Tiara Coughlan. Helget drove the ball towards the right side of the net and Fairmont keeper Burmeister, defender Morgan Shriver and Crusader midfielder raced for the ball. T. Coughlan used her speed and quickness and arrived at the ball first, kicking to Botker for the goal at 35:13 in the second.
Helget scored the Crusaders final goal with 49 seconds left in the game when she nailed a shot from outside the box off an assist from T. Coughlan.
“We came out and were a little slow to start with and then we got our heads together and turned it around pretty quick. We started connecting in the middle we worked it up from the defense and started winning balls and then we finally started taking shots and being more aggressive because they were working us in the beginning and I think we realized that we needed to step it up.” Said Helget
Helget spoke a little about the rivalry between the two teams.
“Oh yeah, Fairmont is always a big rival so a W against them always feels good. They know how we play and we know how they play so it always an interesting, fun and physical game.”
She continued on about this year’s team.
“We lost some good talent from last year so of course that is always tough to bounce back from but we have some new girls out and some younger girls. We also moves some girls around position wise and I think we are really starting to gel and put it together and that is awesome.”
The Crusaders played a very aggressive defense, not allowing a lot of scoring opportunities for the Cardinals.
“It was pretty difficult today because they have some fast forwards and could pass between us but we did pretty well on our off sides so we caught them a couple times. We played them before and we took note of the off sides so we focused on that today.” Said defender Nora Coughlan
Crusaders first year head Coach Nicole Ruhland was happy with the team’s performance against section rival Fairmont.
“We felt that there were some things we needed to work on from our loss to Waseca, like being first to the ball and making sure we were doing our job communicating and using that open space and not crunched up in the center. We were able to do all of those things today.”
The Crusaders take on St. Peter at home on Thursday with a 5:00 pm scheduled start.
