MANKATO, MINN. — The Maple River boys basketball team defeated Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial 65-49 in the opening round of the 2016 Pepsi Holiday Tournament at Bethany Lutheran College on Tuesday.

The Eagles and Knights played in an earlier match-up on December 20th for the famous Brown Jug with Maple River coming out on top 65-48.

The Eagles took a 31-25 lead into the half with Jeff Lewis scoring 7 points for the Eagles and Blaid Friedrichs putting in 14 of his team leading 18 points for the Knights.

“This way a typical game coming off a break, taking a couple of days off and getting motivated to play a team we just beat a week ago. Give Lake Crystal some credit, they played a couple of different defenses and mixed things up and made things difficult for us offensively and if frustrated us on the defensive side,” said Eagles head coach Chad Ostermann “In the second half I thought we played better with some good half court stops which led to some easier baskets which helped us.”

The Eagles Jeff Lewis trys to defend a Blaid Friedrichs shot.

The Eagles had three players scoring in double digits with Wyatt Johnson leading the way with 16 points followed by Cole Sohre with 14 and Lewis with 10.

The Knights were led by Friedrichs with 18 points and Evan Bergemann with 13.

Maple River will take on Minnesota Valley Lutheran tonight with an 8:30 scheduled start in the North Gym. LCWM will play St. Clair at 8:00 pm at Younge Gym.
