Maple River Sends Three Wrestlers To State

BLUE EARTH, MINN. — The Maple River High School wrestling team took part in the Section 2A individual wrestling tournament on Saturday at the Blue Earth Area High School. The tournament was scheduled to take place on Friday and Saturday, but was compressed into one day due to heavy snow on Thursday into Friday – the result, a one day tournament which forced some wrestlers to compete in five matches.
The Eagles had three wrestlers qualify for this years state tournament. Lincoln Arndt (138) and Noah Decker (182) each took first place and will be returning for the third time in their careers. Nathan Moore (145) placed second and will be making his first state appearance.
Five wrestlers from Maple River competed for true second, and had 11 medal winners. Trevor Peterson (106) 3rd, Reise Hanson (120) 3rd, Cody Walters (126) 3rd, Wyatt Simon (132) 3rd, Lincoln Arndt (138) 1st, Nathan Moore (145) 2nd, Jared Moore (152) 5th, Noah Decker (182) 1st, Logan Ziegler (195) 5th, Ethan Caven (220) 5th, Connor Thom (285) 4th.
Arndt enters the tournament with a 33-6 record. Arndt collected his 100th win this season. He will face Michael Petron (20-3) of ROUP in the first round. Arndt finished sixth at 132 pounds in last year’s tournament. Lane Heim (33-3) of St. Charles is the only other medal winner in the bracket, placing fourth at 145 pounds last year.
Moore brings his 29-11 record against Jake Mandt (27-2) of Chatfield. Three past medal-winners move up to compete at 145 pounds. Mandt took third place at 138 pounds last year while Wallace Michels (33-1) of Norwood-Young America placed sixth in that weight class. Kaden Spindler (35-4) of West Central Area/Ashby/Brandon-Evansville finished fourth at 126 pounds.
Decker (36-3) will take on Austin Werner (26-8) of CAH in his opening round match. Two of last year’s medal-winners at 182 pounds return to this year’s tournament. Caden Steffen (38-4) of Zumbrota-Mazeppa, runner-up; and Alec Bueltel (30-4) of Minneota, sixth. They are joined by Brett Kapsner (37-1) of Pierz, who took fifth at 170 pounds last year.
The individual competition of the State Wrestling Tournament is scheduled for March 3-4 at the Xcel Energy Center in downtown St Paul. Tickets: $14 adults, $9 students per single session. $26 adults, $17 students per daily pass. $78 adults, $51 students per season book (includes team tournament on Thursday, March 2).
