MANKATO, MINN. — The 2017 Mankato Area 77 Lancers Marching Band has been working hard on their new show, “The Rings of Saturn” which includes music from and inspired by “Dr. Who” and “Star Trek.”

The Lancers have been holding their practices at Prairie Winds Middle School and Mankato West High School for the first time. The practices were moved from the regular practice area, Mankato East High School, due to construction.

“Moving to West for part of Spat Camp will be a great chance for people to see the show during our annual Meet the Lancers event on June 7,” said Director Brady Krusemark, now in his fifth year leading the Lancers.

Krusemark, having welcomed a new addition to the family a few weeks ago, has taken on a part-time role temporarily, and Assistant Director Brian Kotila has assumed a full-time role in leading the team in recent weeks.

While Meet the Lancers is the community’s first chance to see the 39th version of the Mankato Area 77 Lancers, the parade season kicks off the next day for the band with a competition in Princeton’s Rum River Parade. Two days later they’ll compete in Sartell’s Summerfest Parade. And over the following two weeks they’ll compete in more than a dozen parades. The competitive season concludes June 25 at the Vikingland Band Festival in Alexandria.

“That’s the big one, the one all the kids look forward to,” said Jen Olson, president of the Lancer Parents Association. “It’s a joy to watch them work so hard during Spat Camp and throughout the competitive season and see how far they’ve come by the time they get to Alex.”

Following the competitive season, the band will leave for its annual tour. This year they’re headed to San Francisco where they will, among other things, tour Alcatraz Prison and spend a night on the USS Hornet aircraft carrier! Normally the band takes buses to their tour destination, but this year they’re flying.
