MANKATO, MINN. — The Mankato West girls’ soccer team has been doing some team building this summer in preparation for the upcoming season. The team is coming off an incredible season having won the Big 9, Section 2A and placing 2nd in the 2016 State Tournament.

I caught up with Coach Crissy Makela and the Scarlet ladies during their most recent bonding event – a car wash at the West parking lot.

“We have been doing a number of activities this summer. Besides the car wash the team has done some dancing at Dance Express with Mitzi (Roberts), yoga and kickball.” Said Coach Makela, who was named Minnesota girls soccer coach of the year and received the National Double-Goal Coach award.

Although the activities are not soccer related, they help to build team trust, encourages communication and inspires team members to come together in new ways.

There was a constant flow of cars during the Scarlet car wash on Saturday.

A group of players gathered around my vehicle and laughed when I said it hasn’t been washed in two years.

When asked how they are going to do this year they all said “Great” in unison.

The student athletes have all been busy this summer, playing summer league soccer, working and just being kids having fun.

Although the school year hasn’t started, one player had a big announcement.

“I committed to Mankato (State University) after this year,” said the talented Shelby Lund.

Lund will be joining Scarlet alum Maddy Burandt, a junior midfielder who plays for the Mavericks and Coach Brian Bahl.

McKenna Buisman’s father Kevin (MSU Athletic Director) along with other parents helped out during the car wash.

It is also being reported that McKenna Buisman will be graduating from West early and attending the University of Minnesota where she will be playing soccer for the Gophers. Buisman was scheduled to graduate from West in 2018.

Thank you for the car wash ladies – and thank you to everyone who stopped by and made donations to the team – they raised $711 at the event
