North Mankato Creates Xcel Energy Petition
Public Service – Mankato Times
NORTH MANKATO, MINN. — The City of North Mankato has created a petition requesting Xcel Energy to remove segments 20, 47, 48, 49, 50, 51, and 53 of the Huntley-Wilmarth 345 Kilovolt Transmission Line project from any application to the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission.
Public open houses were held in Mapleton and Mankato on June 20 and 21. The open houses helped gather public input and inform landowners and local communities of the permitting process for the proposed project. Residents were able to learn more information, view potential route maps, ask questions and leave comments to provide feedback on the project and potential routes.
The project is needed to reduce congestion on the transmission grid in southern Minnesota and northern Iowa that is inhibiting low-cost electricity from generation facilities, including wind farms in the area, from reaching customers. The project will provide economic benefits by enabling more low-cost electric generation to reach customers in the region. New wind generation is some of the lowest cost energy available to customers due, in part, to wind being a zero fuel cost resource.
If you would like to sign the petition, please visit City Hall at 1001 Belgrade Avenue. It will be placed at the front desk in the utility billing office.
