Scarlet girls down Spartans 2-0
NORTH MANKATO, MINN. — The Mankato West girls’ soccer team remains undefeated as they handed Rochester Mayo a 2-0 defeat Tuesday at the Caswell North Complex. The Scarlets outshot Mayo 11-0 and keeper Mel Lobitz recorded her 3rd shutout of the season.
With the win the Scarlets improve to 5-0-1, 3-0 Big 9.
The Scarlets are ranked #1 in the QRF and will play #2 Northfield in a Big 9 matchup at Northfield HS Memorial Field tonight (Thursday) with a 7:00 pm scheduled start.
Despite multiple shots on goal, including 3 inside the 18, the Spartans were able to hold the Scarlets to a 0-0 tie going into halftime. Mayo’s defense played a high line which caused Mankato to be offside six times in the first half.
The Scarlets put went up 1-0 at 7:37 (48th minute) into the 2nd half. West crossed midfield, when Kate Nelson sent a slightly lofted ball through the back line of Mayo. McKenna Buisman collected the ball near the center of the field with about 35 yards to the net. She used her speed to stay ahead of the Mayo defense to score off a 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper.
The Scarlets made every second of the game count scoring the 2nd goal of the game with 7 seconds left (80th minute). Rachel Luedtke was positioned about 6 yards from the goal near the center of the goal. The ball came to her from her left. She popped it up with a header to the right post where Katie Roberts finished with a header goal.
This is the 2nd time this season West has scored a header goal from a header assist, with both of those assists coming from Rachel Luedtke.
