MAPLETON, MINN. — The Maple River Eagles wrestling team is senior heavy and has hopes of making it to the state tournament this season.

I spoke with the Eagles head wrestling Coach Dan Robbins Monday during the teams practice in the “hot box,” a second floor gym with an uncontrolled temperature hovering around 80 degrees.

“This should be a good year for our team. We have eight seniors and have two wrestlers who have competed at the state tournament,” said Coach Robbins “Lincoln Arndt has competed at state 3 years and Nathan Moore competed last year for the first time.”

Arndt and the Iceman Moore are joined by fellow seniors Stephen Dobie, Reise Hanson, Bill Karels, Connor Thorn, Cody Walters and Logan Ziegler. Arndt (8th, 152) and Moore (9th, 160) have been ranked in the preseason top 10 in Class A by The Guillotine.

“We have some talented young kids in the program that will help us compete as a team.” Coach Robbins said “We have 22 kids out for wrestling, which is down from years past.”

The rest of the team consists of Austin Clough, Thayne Decker, Ethan Evenson, Bryan Garlow, Hunter Kreiger, Jared Latusek, Trevor Pearson, Dalton Schmidt, Boden Simon, Wyatt Simon, Quinn Simpson, Nathan Trio, Brady Walters and Noah Ziegler.

The Eagles have won the Gopher conference the last two years and have an impressive 18-2 conference record over the past four years.

Maple River finished the 2016-17 season with a 14-8 overall record, defeating United South Central 52-18 in the opening round of the Class A, Section 2 tournament before losing to Blue Earth Area 49-16.

“Our goal is to win the conference and make it to the state tournament as a team,” said the Coach “Last year we lost in the section semi-finals to Blue Earth.”

To make it to the state tournament the Eagles will need to overcome section powerhouses Kenyon-Wanamingo and Blue Earth Area who are ranked 4th and 8th in the preseason Guillotine rankings.

This should be a fun team for fans to watch. They have the depth and talent to make a good run this season.

The Eagles kick off the 2017-18 season this Saturday at the Blue Earth Area Invite with a 10:00 am scheduled start.
