Mankato Area Derby Girls Home Opener Saturday, Feb. 24th
MANKATO, MINN. —- The Mankato Area Derby Girls are excited to host a night of hard hitting, live action roller derby with a double header featuring the A-Town Rollerz (Aberdeen, South Dakota) versus the SCAR Dolls (Saint Cloud, Minnesota) and the Southbound Rollers (Austin, Minnesota) versus Mankato’s own MAD Girls. The event takes place on Saturday, February 24 at the Verizon Center, 1 Civic Center Plaza, Mankato.
Roller derby is a high-contact sport played by two teams of five member’s roller skating in the same direction around a track. Game play consists of a series of short jams in which both teams designate a scoring player (the “jammer”) who scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. The teams attempt to hinder the opposing jammer with legal blocks and hits while assisting their own jammer—in effect, playing both offense and defense simultaneously.
Saturday’s bout, “Derby Inferno” will also have the official after party headlined by The Porchlights. The official after party will follow the derby action and will be at the Verizon Grand Hall. The MAD Girls selected charity for the evening is CADA (Committee Against Domestic Abuse) and they will be collecting items for CADA at the bout. A full list of suggested items can be found on Mankato Area Derby Girls Facebook page.
