MANKATO, MINN. — The Maple River High School boys’ basketball team defeated Saint Peter High School 68-57 Thursday night at the Mankato East gymnasium to advance to the 2AA South Subsection Finals.

With the win the Eagles improve to 19-9 and will play New Richland-Heartland-Ellendale-Geneva High School (24-3) at Minnesota State University Mankato on March 12th with an 8:00 pm scheduled start. The Saints finish their season 8-20.

The Eagles started the game sluggish, heading into the locker room trailing 23-32.

In the second half Maple River came out on fire and tied the game at 37 after Mason Sohre drained two free throws and then stole the ball and drove in for a lay-up. Sohre ended the night with a team leading 20 points.

“In the second half we came out and valued every possession more than we were in the first half. We should have been doing that the whole game,” said Ethan Sindelir “They out rebounded us in the first half and we did a better job in the second half and we started getting stop after stop that helped us get some runs. It is not all about offense, it is about getting it done on the defensive end.”

Sam Bennett makes a modified hook-shot over Joey Baron.

Maple River Head Coach Chad Ostermann said it was a team effort.

“Brock Doering coming off the bench gave us some great minutes, especially in the second half. Andrew Hoppe hit some big threes in the first and second half. Mason made some good drives,” said Osterman “We can’t afford to have just one or two guys, we need a lot of guys to play well and in the second half we did that.”

The Eagles and Panthers have played twice this year, with the Panthers winning 77-63 and 56-42.

“A lot of people are sleeping on us because they beat us twice during the regular season, but when I think of that I go back to my freshman year when Waterville did that to us and we ended up beating them,” said Sindelir who ended the night with 15 points “We know what we can do and if we put together a good 36 minutes we can beat anyone out there.”

The winner of the game between the Eagles and Panthers will play the winner of Jordan / Sibley East on March 16th at MSU-Mankato at 8:00 pm.
