NORTH MANKATO, MINN. —- On 05/11/18 an investigative effort jointly conducted by the North Mankato Police Department, The Minnesota River Valley Drug Task Force, and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension resulted in the arrest of a Mankato man for 3rd Degree Murder.
On April 12th North Mankato Police were called to an apartment for an unresponsive female and found a 29-year-old female deceased. Evidence at the scene led police to believe that the female died as the result of a drug overdose. Police located drug paraphernalia and an unknown powder in the apartment.
The Minnesota River Valley Drug Task Force was contacted to assist with identifying the source of the powder, which police suspected was an opioid. Through investigative measures task force agents were able to identify 38-year-old Otis Dear of Mankato as the source of the substance. Drug task force agents obtained a search warrant for Dear’s Mankato residence on 04/19/18. During execution of the search warrant a small amount of powder similar to the substance found at the overdose scene was located.
The BCA drug testing lab identified the powder found at the overdose scene and the powder located in Dear’s home as a substance containing fentanyl. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 100 times more potent than morphine.
An autopsy was conducted by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner and the victim’s cause of death was ruled an overdose. The victim’s toxicology results showed that she had fentanyl in her system.
Dear is currently in the Nicollet County Jail awaiting his first court appearance.
